12 And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?
Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Powerful words, eh? Even over 2,000 years later they still hold true. Imagine what it could be like if only the rest of the world was like this. Sometimes, I even wished I could follow them to the letter of the decree because it looks so simple and really doesn’t need lawyers to figure out.
And later in the book it says…
18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
Deuteronomy 10:18-21
Now my parents weren’t very religious people but they still observed the high holidays of the Jewish faith. Even still, for your own good was one phrase they emphasized when I was growing up. So I guess with that, they believed in the words of Deuteronomy 10:13. And they believed in Him even though in a different way.
But still….even to this day, some 2,000 plus years later the words of Deuteronomy 10:12-13 hold truth. Lets try to make it happen and maybe the world will be a better place.
