I know I haven’t written in quite a while and since its a nice quiet Sunday morning, I thought it would be a good time for an update. Since my setback as written in an earlier post, Minor Setback, I have been experimenting with alternating wearing the CI along with the HA and the CI alone.
I find that the CI is either too soft or since my left ear was my primary for so long, the brain is adjusting to the HA by putting more focus on it than I want it to, even if I lower the volume. But, the good news in doing all this is the facial twitching almost completely gone. I only feel it when sound is really loud or very sharp such as hands clapping or a sharp rap on a surface.
So yesterday, I attended a general meeting for the Checkers AC with just the CI. I sat both close and far, from the speaker. I didn’t have any difficulty within 15 feet of the speaker, even though the CI is much softer than before. The brain can do some really amazing things since it must have adjusted for the CI being softer. That’s a good sign and means the facial nerve isn’t getting stimulated. If it does and for long periods of time, it becomes very sensitive and can be damaged permanently. It looks like the one small step backwards has become one small step forward and another small step is right around the corner!
