5 miles

October 12, 2012 in Cochlear Implants, Personal Reflections, Running

5 miles…that is how many I ran on this cool, crispy, 30s fall morning at 5AM with Steph, 3 dear lovely young ladies and an old geezer who I won’t reveal his name to protect his reputation.  At an 8:39 pace, this averages out to about 6.9 mph. I usually run in total silence in the mornings but this morning, I hooked myself up to Neppie so I could hear the chatty ladies behind me.  But feeling the cool crisp air in my face while trying to keep up with the old geezer is totally worth it.  Some people think I am nuts for getting out of bed at such an ungodly hour.  Others marvel me at how I can do it. It wasn’t long ago…about 3 1/2 years since I had 2 pen springs inserted into my heart.  Ever since, I still get up at some ungodly hour or

Second chance

October 11, 2012 in Personal Reflections, Politics, Running

I can’t tell you how many second chances I have had over my lifetime but believe me, almost every single one of them has been worth it.  For that reason, I believe President Obama deserves a second chance and that is who I am going to vote for next month. I have had a enough of the political mudslinging and distorted truths.  The posting of statistics on Facebook has been relentless.   Half of it is either bullshit or countered by some other meaningless statistic.  Just this morning, I read in the AARP magazine that Republican Romney claims to have worked with the Democratic legislature in Massachusetts.  And then the articles says while he has cast over 800 vetoes,  more than 700 have been overturned.  That leads to my first reason for picking Obama…Congress. Obama has the misfortune of working with the most dysfunctional, gridlocked, “we don’t give a shit”,

Walking to work

October 10, 2012 in Personal Reflections

On most days, I walk to work.  It’s only a mile and on a morning like today, the air is crispy, refreshing and invigorating.  The sun is rising over the east lending a sense of warmth and tranquil to the peacefulness of nature.  Walking to work gives me a chance to think and reflect. I wish I could dictate my thoughts and have them come out magically here.  If that was the case, I’ll be amazed at the mumble jumble that occupies my brain.  In fact it gets so overwhelming, I walked right past the mailboxes and forgot to mail in my check for the Ionraic Triathlon Club season ending banquet, next week.  So, instead if further mumble jumbling my brain by having to remember all day to mail this all important check I went back out into the crispy, refreshing invigorating air to the post office. And while at the

America’s obesity problem

October 5, 2012 in Lighter moments, Personal Reflections

When 13 cars are waiting at the drive-thru window of Tim Horton’s at 7:45AM on a warm fall morning and there are well over 500 empty parking spaces in the lot…it doesn’t surprise me that America has an obesity problem!   And this does not even show the traffic back-up that typically occurs when such a line backs up into the street. I would challenge any organization that has a drive up window to raise their prices 10% just for utilizing the drive-thru.  If that doesn’t solve the problem, lets raise them more….20%, 25%…heck 50% if it helps.  You know, when I was a kid I walked a mile to catch my bus to school…a MILE!  And this was in rain, snow, sleet, hail and whatever else mother nature felt like on any given day. Oh….this picture was taken…on my daily one mile walk to work.

Eye-ryda-bike

July 20, 2012 in Biking, Personal Reflections

Pronounce it slowly…yes, I ride a bike.  Actually, I have three of them but my favorite is a road bike.  See, I am a triathlete and biking is the 2nd of three disciplines. Yesterday, there was an editorial in the Buffalo News.  You can read it here.  It talks about a cyclist that was killed a couple of weeks ago when struck by a dump truck.  Ironically, he was whacked in the back by a truck mirror 2 weeks earlier.  All of this despite every possible safety precaution – bright colored helmet, bright yellow vest.  Trust me, on a clear day you should be able to see this, unless you’re blind or distracted.  If that is the case, you shouldn’t even be on the road to begin with. I think its time to give cyclists more protection.  We have bike lanes.  We have some paved shoulders that are wide enough

I am me, you are you…

July 17, 2012 in Personal Reflections

Ok folks…here I am back from a hiatus because someone decided to rub me the wrong way.  Generally, I prefer to be a nocturnal quiet person, minding my own business and going about my life.  But there are some people who waste their time and energy taking exception. Let me get one thing straight.  If you have a problem with my Facebook post/comment, ignore it just like 99% of the population.  Secondly, do NOT tell me my posts are stupid, offensive, violate “your rules”, or broadcast to that effect.  And lastly, I am sorry to say but if the truth hurts, too bad; don’t censor me for that! I was kicked out of a group on Facebook called Cochlear Implant Experiences.  I was kicked out for what they perceive to be brand bashing.  Someone posted a satirical version of my cochlear implant competitor’s attempt to demonstrate their device can match mine in

How we do it with the loss of hearing…

March 26, 2012 in Cochlear Implants, Personal Reflections

Last Friday, I found the following in my inbox on Facebook from a very dear friend who we affectionately call Bee: Hi there, I hope your recovery is going well with your ankle. You will be back out there before you know it. I gotta tell you i don’t know how you do it with the loss of hearing. I woke up (in early Feb) and could hardly hear anything out of my right ear. I have had fluid behind the eardrum since I had pneumonia in 1999 and was told to have a tube put in and was too afraid to, so I have had a slight hearing problem because of that ever since. well after being very sick for almost 4 weeks in Jan and feb more fluid built up. After seeing the ear DR he said the loss may be permanent. I had a tube inserted this

An inspiring post by a running friend…

August 14, 2011 in Personal Reflections

Someone once said – “There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh & love you unconditionally. Forget the bad, and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living.”

A personal reflection that affects all of us…

July 31, 2011 in Personal Reflections

This is something that I read yesterday and it has been in my mind ever since.  I know I am guilty of violating this principle more times than anyone can count.  If you believe, then you know He is forgiving…..thank God, literally! We all should give this careful consideration, whether we believe or not.  When you read this, please give it a “big picture” thought and apply every day common sense logic because it does strike the heart deeply in our every day life….   Romans 2 God’s Righteous Judgment 1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do
