Yesterday, I did the Louis J. Billittier Memorial 5K. Here is my line:
41. Sam Spritzer 0:22:23 0:07:12 4/M50-54 35/M
The course started in front of Chef’s restaurant and winded up out by the harbor before looping back. It was in the 60s and sunny. Even though it was beautiful, I wasn’t prepared for the sun bearing down and as the race progressed, it actually felt much hotter than it was. So I went out too fast…6:22 for a first mile, 7:11 for the second and then crashed and burned to the finish line. Mistake #1-Didn’t pace with anyone. Mistake #2-Not enough water. Mistake #3-Not enough for the last kick. Oh well, there will be better days!
We also have a team entered in the Buffalo Marathon called Checkers 50. Steph is designated captain and will be doing the first leg (10K/6.2 miles). This will mostly downtown Buffalo, LaSalle Park and the harbor. I’ll be doing the second leg (10K/6.2 miles) which runs through South Buffalo covering the course used in the Shamrock Run. Its a toughie since there are a couple of overpasses that go UP, UP, and UP…out and back. “Big” Mike K. will be doing the third leg (10K/6.2 miles). This one will be heading uptown through the neighborhood around Delaware Park. And the Ironlady, Diane S., will be doing the anchor leg which covers 12K/7.6 miles. That heads back downtown with the finish line at the Convention Center.
Next race for me and Steph – The 1st Annual Elephant Run on Sunday, May 13th.
Hey Sam,
Lol, No I didn’t need to get a Mohawk, my hair is short anyway, they just shaved a little off around the ear, less then I thought they would. Which was GOOD!
A friend of mine used to run in a lot of triathlons (20 years ago) up in the Oneonta, Binghamton area. He went to school at Plattsburg State and lived in Masonville NY. I would go to a bunch of his races and I would be his own personal waterboy π I never ran in any of the races, don’t think I would of finished :), but it was a lot of fun hanging out and helping my friend breath after the races :). He was a great swimmer, good biker, but the running is what killed him, out of some 300 entries, he came out of the water around 20th place, after the biking, around 100 place, after the running, don’t ask π But it was a good workout for him and he loved doing that.
We still keep in touch and he still lives in Masonville, small town in the middle of no-where. Runs a motel, restaurant, so if your ever in the area and need a room, you know where to go π
Hey, you must be excited about your Sabres, I know my son is, did my Rangers in, but we did put up a fight, and a lot of those games could of went either way. Big test coming up now, Senators are a tough team.
Anyway, keep on running, and don’t forget your water π
Billy
Sam,
6:22??? If that mile mark was accurate, you should think about running the mile on June 8th. But don’t try that again on Sunday, not with a longer distance.
My area of the marathon is about miles 13 – 16. So, it will be Mike that I’ll see on race day. Good luck to your team. I know there is a masters men’s team for Checkers – a good one with Dave Spillman and Jerry Mangon – but I don’t know if there are any other mixed masters teams.
Greg
I think the Checkers water stop will be in your leg at mile 9…
Greg
Actually, the course measurement was correct….it was my brain that didn’t tell me I was going too fast! And how can I run in the Mile if I am going to be doing something there since I am on the committee?
Jeanne was on the committee last year and ran the race – she jumped in at the last minute when she saw who was – and wasn’t – registered in the elite women’s master’s race. But I think she was the only one on the committee who did.
Race day was pretty hectic for most of us, but if you wanted to break away from your duties for about 6:22 to run the race, I’m sure that would be ok….
